453 BC: The house of Zhao defeats the house of Zhi, ending the Battle of Jinyang, a military conflict between the elite families of the State of Jin during the Spring and Autumn period of China.


1516: A group of imperial guards, led by Trịnh Duy Sản, murder Emperor Lê Tương Dực and fled, leaving the capital Thăng Long undefended

1895: The Treaty of Shimonoseki imposed to China by Japan, signed on 17 April 1985 enters into force by the exchange of the instruments of ratification at Chefoo

1942: The Battle of the Coral Sea comes to an end with Japanese Imperial Navy aircraft carrier aircraft attacking and sinking the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS Lexington. The battle marks the first time in the naval history that two enemy fleets fight without visual contact between warring ships

1999: Beginning of the Kargill conflict between India and Pakistan, up to July 14

2002: In Karachi, a bomb attack on a bus belonging to the French navy company DCN causes the death of 14 people including  9 French

2007: Military inter-Korean negotiations resume. It is decided that for the first time since 1953 that the railway between the two countries will be tested

2013: People’s Daily publishes a call for a review of Japan’s sovereignty over the island of Okinawa, home to major US bases, with the Asian powers already embroiled in a territorial row
